Changes since last year

2017 will see the start of OMFS training in Ireland for the first time in 15 years. Provision has been made for the first 3 years of training ST1-3 in Ireland and the final 2 years to be completed in a large OMFS unit in UK. The RCSI through the OMFS training committee will oversee training standards. The SAC (Specialty Advisory Committee) RCS   will oversee training also and there will be a close relationship between both training boards.

Have started All Ireland study days incorporating OMFS both in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Opportunities

Will develop relationship between OMFS in Northern Ireland with a possible view to All Ireland Training similar to other specialties.

Threats

CME Requirements

BREXIT may be a threat to cross border relationship and training opportunities in UK. Historically and presently the over whelming majority of Irish trainees trained or are training in UK.

We are also anxious about the future of the Collegiate system between all the Colleges, England, Ireland, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We feel that dual degree status is very important for the future of OMFS as this is what makes us unique as opposed to ENT and Plastics.
