Latvia formally moves to dual degree OMFS in the most recent Annex V table of Directive 2005

We are very happy to pass on the news that Latvian OMFS is now formally recognised as dual degree OMFS (called Dental, Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery or DOMFS in Annex V) within the European Union. As well has sitting under DOMFS (basic medical and dental training) in the table, Latvia now has its own footnote in the latest version of Annex V which says:

“In the past, Latvia notified the title ‘Mutes, sejas un žokļu ķirurģija’ under the medical specialty ‘maxillo-facial surgery (basic medical training)’ under point 5.1.3 of Annex V to Directive 2005/36/EC. In a new notification Latvia indicated that this title should be removed from that part of point 5.1.3 and added instead to the medical specialty ‘Dental, oral and maxilla-facial surgery (basic medical and dental training)’. Thus, the title ‘Mutes, sejas un žokļu ķirurģija’ should be moved under the medical specialty ‘Dental, oral and maxilla-facial surgery (basic medical and dental training)’ under point 5.1.3 of Annex V to Directive 2005/36/EC.

Although Latvia has mandated dual degree OMFS for many years, until now the formal position of Latvia in Annex V of Directive 2005/36 was within single degree 'Maxillofacial Surgery'. This formal change recognises the hard work and dedication of our OMFS colleagues in Latvia and is great news for Latvian patients.

Currently dual degree OMFS is in the majority in OMFS with 21 nations being formally within DOMFS, or having mandated dual degree training. A summary of the current position can be downloaded here.
